Post War

The 1st Canadian Parachute Battalion had proved the usefulness of a mobile striking force in the modern army, and the Canadian Government approved the formation of the Canadian Parachute Training Centre in Shilo, Manitoba, and the Joint Air School in Rivers, Manitoba.

Canada’s Cold War parachute capability was centred around three distinct, but related organizations: The Canadian Special Air Service Organization, which was formed in 1948 and provided army, inter-service and public duties and was the foundation for the future parachute battalions; the Mobile Striking Force, stood up in 1949 under an agreement with the United States of America to protect our northern flank against Soviet invasion; and the Defence of Canada Force, which replaced the Mobile Striking Force in 1958 when it was realized that any Soviet invasion would likely be air based. Our parachute capabilities were reduced and had become the responsibility of the Princess Patricia’s Canadian Light Infantry (PPCLI), the Royal Canadian Regiment (RCR) and the Royal 22ieme Regiment (R22eR).
