CFB Petawawa Military Museum
The area we now know as CFB Petawawa has a long history of human habitation - First Peoples, explorers like Champlain and early Scottish, English and German settlers. In 1905, after considering two other sites for military training, national politicians and senior military officers chose Petawawa for a new military camp. Since then CFB Petawawa has played an active role in Canada’s history – it has housed internment, POW and labour relief camps, played a distant role in the Russian revolution, witnessed the flight of the Silver Dart in 1909, and has played host to some illustrious leaders and military officers. Some famous Regiments and Units have called the Ottawa Valley home – the Royal Canadian Regiment, Canadian Guards, 427 Tactical Helicopter Squadron and the Royal Canadian Dragoons. The stories of these and other illustrious Regiments and Units, and the men and women who have proudly served Canada are told in the CFB Petawawa Military Museum and Canadian Airborne Forces Museum. The Base has grown from a city of tents, to a dynamic modern and vibrant community. Thousands of men and women have passed through her gates – to train, to support and go off to war. Most recently, our service personnel have deployed to Afghanistan. Currently there are approximately 5,000 persons employed at CFB Petawawa (4,400 of them military) whom are included in the units of 2 CMBG, CFB/ASU Petawawa and Lodger Units. With the reorganization of the Canadian Forces, Petawawa will see some rapid growth over the next five years. We look forward to a bright and prosperous future in the Ottawa Valley.
